UGC- Special Assistance Programme Department of Sociology School of Social Sciences University of Hyderabad   Invites you to a talk on   "The Indispensibility of Informality in an Indian Urban Economy: Narratives of Waste".   By   Prof.  Barbara Harris-White Emeritus Professor of Development Studies University of Oxford   on                                                                   22nd September, 2015 (Tuesday)    at 2:30  p.m.     Venue: Humanities Auditorium, School of Humanities.   All are invited Abstract:   All human activity produces waste. A piece of exploratory field research carried out earlier in 2015 is the basis of an analysis of the economic and social  relations of waste - things and substances without value that emerge from the circuits of production, distribution, consumption and social reproduction, whether that zero or negative value lasts for seconds or for geological eternity.  India's is the fastest growing waste economy in the world - peak waste being estimated at a century away. In this talk the relation between registered /state-regulated waste-work and unregistered and informal relations of waste will be discussed. It will be argued that the informal economy of waste is indispensable to the formal one, and both are as in
