[WhatsUpUoH] [Sawaaljawaab] Ekalavya Science Reality Show | Panel Discussion

Hi Ms Shubha Tiwari,

I am Tarun Ayitam, the Founder of Sciensation, a science media startup which is into science communication. I got to know about Sawaal Jawaab through one of the lectures organized at Lamakaan.

This email is regarding a panel discussion being organized on "incorporating research methodologies in school education" by Sciensation in association with TV5 and Radiocity. The Panel discussion will be organized during the finals of Ekalavya contest in which students will be presenting the research which they've conducted during their summer vacations. This would provide the right context to the discussion.

We are having a representative from Teach for India, Ms Srinidhi Dasaka of TCS representing the recruiters perspective, Mr Abhimanyu Acharya of Glendale Academy representing educationist's perspective. We hope to add in a speaker from the Academia and a couple of speakers from the Education Industry.

We would be publishing all the suggestions within the post event newsletter, so that interested school managements may benefit from the same. We are pleased to inform that Vishwam Edutech is one of the partners of the event and are distributing these newsletters to managements of 3000 schools across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

We'd like to have a researcher from TIFR to represent the Academia in the panel. We believe that this churning process will help school managements in understanding the creneaus in the education system and in exploring ideas to solve the same. Could you help us in inviting a speaker from TIFR who may be able to brainstorm with panelists and churn out good suggestions.

I have marked a copy to Ms Sarala, the principal of Rajadhani Global School.
We hope that you'd encourage this novel initiative.

Materials Science and Nano-Engineering at Rice University in Houston USA.
Prof. Ajayan's research is at the cutting edge of developing materials
such as carbon nanotubes, nanocomposites, graphene and other 2D materials.
He will speak about these materials of the future: exploring and
assembling nanostructures, their remarkable properties, and the challenges
involved in integrating them into real-world applications.

Talk Title: "Nano: the big push to make it small"
Date: Saturday June 6, 2015
Time: 2:00 pm
Venue: Lamakaan
off Road No. 1, Banjara Hills, near GVK One Mall

[WhatsUpUoH] UNESCO CHAIR AT UoH TO WORK IN AFRICA

UNESCO CHAIR AT UoH TO WORK IN AFRICA

The UNESCO Chair on Community Media at the University of Hyderabad (UoH) has been awarded a prestigious grant by UNESCO's International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC) for a unique inter-regional initiative in East Africa.

The Chair, the only one of its kind in the world, headed by Prof. Vinod Pavarala, was set up at the Department of Communication, UoH in 2011 by UNESCO to promote the cause of community media through research, advocacy, capacity building, and knowledge dissemination.

The IPDC grant of 9500 (Nine thousand five hundred) US dollars to the Chair will support a joint project with the East African Community Media Network to build capacities for continuous improvement and sustainability of the community radio sector in the region. The work to be taken up later this year will involve the adaptation and application of the Community Radio Continuous Improvement Toolkit (CRCIT), developed by the UNESCO Chair team, to strengthen community radio in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Burundi. The toolkit, available currently in English, Hindi, and Bengali, is already being used widely by community radio stations in India and Bangladesh.

[WhatsUpUoH] RARE DISCOVERY PUSHES BACK IRON AGE IN INDIA (Iron Artefacts Found In UoH Dates To Roughly 2,200 BC

May 18 2015 : The Times of India (Hyderabad)

RARE DISCOVERY PUSHES BACK IRON AGE IN INDIA

Siddharth Tadepalli

Hyderabad:

Iron Artefacts Found In UoH Dates To Roughly 2,200 BC

Iron Age may have come into existence in Telangana much before earlier thought. At least that's the conclusion reached by archaeologists excavating the University of Hyderabad campus who found iron artefacts dating back to roughly 2,200 BC.

The team of archaeologists, led by professor KP Rao, has found several artefacts, including small knives and blades besides earthen pots. "The implements were tested at National Geo physical Research Institute (NGRI) using a method called Optically Simulated Luminescence (OSL). The metal objects were dated to anywhere between 1,800 BC and 2,400 BC. So we are assuming they were made during 2200 BC," Prof KP Rao told TOI. This, he said, predates the existing understanding about the advent of the Iron Age in the country. Worldwide, experts have put the dawn of the age around 1,200 BC, marking the time when humans started exploiting metals to make basic tools. "In India, it was understood that the Iron Age came into being around 1,800 BC in the Lahuradeva region of Uttar Pradesh. But this latest development shows that the Iron Age started much before that, at least in our country ," Rao said.

"It only goes to show that our ancestors had a rudimentary yet good knowledge about wielding weapons made of metals. We had estimated that the only metal that was moulded was copper, but due to its scarce nature it was not a feasible option. The idea of using abundant iron ore for tools and weapons is a landmark achievement," he added.

Currently , archaeologists have excavated 25 burial sites in the UoH area and the samples have been subjected to DNA analysis.

The growth of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancers, and chronic lung and kidney diseases worldwide poses major challenges for LMIC health systems. This programme will develop the next generation of health professionals that can dynamically and creatively organize and deploy resources, plan and implement interventions, evaluate and develop policies, and provide leadership to strengthen their health systems.

During this unique training programme, mid-career health professionals and researchers will complete a three-week intensive course at a leading U.S. university to develop skills in implementation, and leadership development. Programme participants will have the opportunity to work with and learn from global experts in their areas of interest.

This programme will last a period of eleven months, beginning in June of 2015 and running through April of 2016. Dr. Shamanna's commitments for this programme will include: participation in monthly webinars; to identify, develop, and implement a project with guidance from an in-country mentor; team projects with PH-LEADER peers; attendance at the three-week intensive short course at the Rollins School of Public Health, Emory University, from 29 July – 14 August 2015.
