Dr B R Shamanna of UoH selected for Public Health Leadership programme at Emory University, USA

The Public Health Leadership and Implementation Academy (PH-LEADER) for non-communicable diseases (NCDs), Emory University based in Atlanta, USA has selected Dr B R Shamanna of the University of Hyderabad (UoH) to participate in the 2015-16 one-year mentored learning experience in public health leadership and implementation science. Dr. Shamanna who is an Associate Professor in the School of Medical Sciences, will be designated as a "PH-LEADER" in this highly competitive programme sponsored by the US National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The PH-LEADER offers a collaborative interdisciplinary professional development program established to provide training in implementation sciences and leadership for public health professionals working in the field of NCDs in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). The growth of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancers, and chronic lung and kidney diseases worldwide poses major challenges for LMIC health systems. This programme will develop the next generation of health professionals that can dynamically and creatively organize and deploy resources, plan and implement interventions, evaluate and develop policies, and provide leadership to strengthen their health systems.

During this unique training programme, mid-career health professionals and researchers will complete a three-week intensive course at a leading U.S. university to develop skills in implementation, and leadership development. Programme participants will have the opportunity to work with and learn from global experts in their areas of interest.

This programme will last a period of eleven months, beginning in June of 2015 and running through April of 2016. Dr. Shamanna's commitments for this programme will include: participation in monthly webinars; to identify, develop, and implement a project with guidance from an in-country mentor; team projects with PH-LEADER peers; attendance at the three-week intensive short course at the Rollins School of Public Health, Emory University, from 29 July – 14 August 2015.

Dr. Shamanna has completed his medical education from Karnataka Medical College, and his MD in Community Medicine from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. He completed his M.Sc. from University College London and also holds a double Diplomate of the National Board in Maternal & Child Health as well as Social & Preventive Medicine. He is a visiting faculty to the Masters in Public Health Eye care at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine as well as the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. He is a VISITING PROFESSOR TO MANIPAL UNIVERSITY. He has published extensively, and his interests are Health & Welfare economics, Disability Inclusive Development, Education and teaching methods, ALTERNATIVE OPINIONS and Politics in Health Care.
