[WhatsUpUoH] UPE Lecture on 'Bridging Academic R&D with Product Innovation..' 3.30 pm Tuesday 1March Life Science Auditorium

Dear All,

The following Lecture will take place under the auspices of the UPE Lecture series. It is requested that colleagues and students may kindly be urged to participate. The details including Synopsis are given below and in the attached poster.

TITLE: BRIDGING ACADEMIC R&D WITH PRODUCT INNOVATION- A FEW CASE STUDIES AND A WAY FORWARD

SPEAKER: Prof.V.RAMGOPAL RAO, IIT Mumbai

VENUE: School of Life Sciences Auditorium

Date and Time: 1st March 2016,  3:30 PM

Abstract:

India's contribution to the world's R&D and Intellectual Property is steadily increasing. In certain specialized areas such as Nanotechnology, India is among the top 3 countries in the world in terms of research publications and patent filings. Despite the low percentage of GDP spending for R&D in India, Indian researchers have excelled in research output, when measured in terms of the number of research publications. Though these are excellent achievements, the situation is entirely different when one looks at the innovation or the product development potential in the country. For example, India ranks 81 out of 141 countries on the Global Innovation Index (GII) for innovation, and the research undertaken by institutions, whether public or private, has hardly resulted in any major technological innovation  of significant commercial value.

Given this scenario, in order to make the Indian research competitive and sustainable in terms of innovation and product development, a multitude of initiatives have recently been contemplated and launched at the national level. In this talk, we will discuss the changing scenario for product innovation in Indian academic institutions, and also see how one can accelerate the culture of product innovation in Indian academic institutions.

Dr. V. Ramgopal Rao is a P. K. Kelkar Chair Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and the Chief Investigator for the Centre of Excellence in Nanoelectronics project at IIT Bombay. Dr. Rao has over 400 publications in the area of Electron Devices &Nanoelectronics in refereed international journals and conference proceedings and is an inventor on 32 patents (including 13 issued US patents) and patent applications, with many of his patents licensed to industries for commercialization. He is also a co-founder of the company NanoSniff Technologies Pvt. Ltd. at IIT Bombay which is developing products in the area of Nanotechnology.

Prof. Rao's work is recognized with many awards and honors in the country and abroad. He is a recipient of the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in Engineering Sciences in 2005 and the Infosys Prize in 2013. Dr. Rao also received the Swarnajayanti Fellowship award from the Department of Science & Technology, IBM Faculty award, Best Research award from the Intel Asia Academic Forum, Techno-Mentor award from the Indian Semiconductor Association, DAE-SRC Outstanding Research Investigator award, NASI-Reliance Platinum Jubilee award, J.C.Bose National Fellowship, and the Excellence in Research Award from IIT Bombay. Prof. Rao was an Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Electron Devices during 2003-2012 for the CMOS Devices and Technology area and currently serves on the Editorial boards of various other international journals. Dr. Rao is a Fellow of the INAE, IASc, NASI and INSA. He is a Distinguished Lecturer, IEEE Electron Devices Society and interacts closely with many semiconductor industries including Intel, IBM, Infineon, Applied Materials, Maxim and Texas Instruments.

Dr. Rao is currently the Chairman, IEEE AP/ED Bombay Chapter and Vice-President, Materials Research Society of India. He also served as a Vice-Chairman, IEEE Asia Pacific Regions/Chapters sub-committee during 2007-2013 and was the first elected Chairman for the India section, American Nano Society during 2013-2015.

[WhatsUpUoH] UoH Bengali Samsad Presents Bhasha 2016

Respected Madam/Sir/Friends,

On the Occasion of International Mother Language Day, UoH Bengali Samsad wants to recall the sacrifices of the martyrs of Ekushey. On 21st February, 1952, Dhaka, four students - Abdus Salam, Rafiq, Barkat and Abdul Jabbar were gunned down by state security personnels for the 'crime' of agitating for recognition of their mother language. This incident triggered off a mass movement for collective self-recognition of the Bengali people and their language. In their struggle the students, workers, peasants and homemakers of Bengal articulated pledges of International solidarity with all oppressed people fighting for self-respect across the globe.

In context of our very own grief, as part of the university community, on the death of our friend Rohith Vemula, this recalling is our humble endeavor to cope with this tragedy. To arrive at a closure that do not blunt the deep anger articulated by Rohith and stand by what Rohith stood for. Wherever students had asserted their identity and demanded social justice, establishments had brutally cracked down with their 303s, prison camps, rubber bullets and, when nothing worked, by institutional discrimination and spreading misinformation – as in Dhaka in 1952 or the shootings in Jackson and Kent State Universities in 1970, in Cairo in 2011, in Tunis, in Prague, in Tienanmen Square, in Bangalore, in Madras, in Ajmir; Trayvon Martin, Allison Krause, William Scrhoeder, Sandra Scheuer, Jeffrey Miller, Senthil Balraj, Madari Venkatesh, Rohith Vemula, Mohit Chauhan, the Unknown, and the next in line. It's our part to uphold what they fight for.

In that regard, if people with native language other than Bengali also want to participate and perform in BHASHA, 2016 in their cultural medium, we would consider this attempt of ours to talk across cultures in solidarity to be worthwhile.

We cordially invite you to join us in "BHASHA 2016".

Yours Sincerely,

UoH Bangali Samsad

B V Karanth: Baba 2012 (93 Min.), is a biographical Kannada-language feature length documentary film on the life and times of B. V. Karanth, the man who influenced Post Independence Modern Indian Theater, the most. The film bases itself on B. V. Karanth's autobiography Illiralaare, Allige Hogalaare (I Can't Stay Here, I Won't Go There) in Kannada language compiled by well-known Kannada writer Vaidehi.

Although it bases itself on B. V. Karanth's autobiography Illialaare, Allige Hogallare, the film introduces and then unfolds Karanth's life through a series of memories through the words of many of B. V. Karanth's colleagues, friends, relatives and students.

THE BANKRUPTS (HAAL-E-KANGAAL)

105 minutes / Black Comedy / Hindi / India / 2015
Cast: Niraj Sah, Hemant Mahaur
Associate Director: Suresh Gujar

The Bankrupts is about two filmmakers who meet after a gap of fifteen years. As one of them narrates a script of a film to the another, the past catches up with them and for the two friends the celebration soon turns into a secession of one up-man-ship where accusations flow freely - the question of success, of failures and of a subtle comparison of individual achievements arise. The duo by the end of the film realise that they are as bankrupt as ever - literally, and in all sense of the word.

Production Notes
The Bankrupts or Haal-E-Kangaal is a two-character film set in an apartment in a Housing Colony in the City of Mumbai, India. The two characters are caught in their web of their own making and by the end of the film realise a sense of emptiness, worthlessness and bankruptcy.

LOHIT DIARY

76 minutes / English-Hindi-Mishimi-Assamese / EST / HD / Documentary / India / 2015
Producer : Films Division
Writer / Director : Ramchandra PN
Camera : Narayanan Venkataraman

Amidst rampant opium cultivation in Eastern Arunachal Pradesh in North-East India, Basamlu Kisikro engages opium growers into shifting to green tea, Tewa Manpoong supports fellow addicts into rehabilitation and Uncle Moosa spreads the joy of reading amongst children.

Production Notes
Two years of filming in four schedules has resulted in this film. This started off as a documentary film on Sathyanarayanan Mundayoor, a south INdian residing in Arunachal Pradesh for more than 30 years. Ground realities compelled me to expand the scope of the film to include opium cultivation in the area.

Ramchandra PN is an Indian filmmaker based in the city of Mumbai. He is a 1991 'Screenplay writing and Direction' graduate from the 'Film and TV Institute of India', Asia's premier film school situated in Poona. His first feature SUDDHA The Cleansing Rites) won the Best Indian Film at the 2006 Osean Cinefan Festival of Asian Films. He second feature PUTAANI PARTY won the best children's film at the 2009 National Awards. Over the years, he has been making documentaries, features, short films and TV programs; and also has been off and on involved in film academics.
