[WhatsUpUoH] Fwd: talk by Dr. Nikhila H, EFLU 28th, tuesday, 4pm, new seminar hall on "marking out the south in/of hindi cinema"

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From:

Welcomes All to a Talk by

Dr. Nikhila H.

(Department of Film Studies and Visual Communication, EFLU)

On

Marking out the "South" in/of Hindi Cinema: An Approach via Remakes

Date & Time:

28th October 2014 (Tuesday), 4–5 p.m.

      Venue

SEMINAR HALL, School of Social Sciences

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

About the presentation: Hindi cinema accords itself a certain difference vis-à-vis the 'south'. At the same time, we see Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam films being dubbed or remade in Hindi, or southern productions making films simultaneously in other languages. This might involve adopting a range of strategies, which this paper addresses. The paper focuses on the cultural flows from Kannada to Bombay cinema, the repertoire of images and narratives that go on to constitute the South in particular ways vis-a-vis Hindi. I will be looking at remakes to see, as Appadurai (1996) says, how 'a social imaginaire [is] built largely around reruns', by taking the instance of such Kannada films remade in Hindi.

About the Speaker: Dr. Nikhila H. teaches in the Department of Film Studies and Visual Communication. Her doctoral work was on women's writing and communalism, considering the context of Partition. Her areas of research interest are Gender Studies and derivatively there-from, Film and Visual Culture Studies. She finds the areas of convergence of language and gender particularly challenging, and much of her research and publications are in this interface and their changing dynamics across times and spaces, looking at print and other forms of media

Listening Post is an informal initiative. All are invited.

[WhatsUpUoH] Fwd: The IIT Madras International Symposium

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Symposium, IIT Madras <symposium@shaastra.org>
Date: Sat, Oct 25, 2014 at 7:52 AM
Subject: The IIT Madras International Symposium

Dear Sir/Madam,

This email is to extend our invitation to the students of your institute to participate at the IIT Madras International Symposium, an event hosted at Shaastra, at the Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai.

Shaastra, Asia's largest student run festival, is the annual technical festival of IIT Madras, where some of the brightest minds from colleges across the world participate in various technical and innovation challenges. However, the Symposium is open to students from various academic backgrounds, including medicine, law, technology and the humanities.

The details of the event has been given below.

A little bit about us:

Scheduled to be held between the 3rd and 6th of January 2015,  Shaastra is the first ISO 9001:2008 certified student-organized technical festival. Shaastra is an excellent platform for students across the country to exhibit their technological skills. It also attempts to include multiple perspectives to promote a more inclusive approach to technology and policy-making, and this is where our Symposium comes in.

About the IIT Madras International Symposium on Healthcare:

Over the past years, our Symposium has been a platform for discussion and debate among the visionaries of today and the leaders of tomorrow. It provides a stimulating environment for debate through many mentoring sessions, to consider many view points, and creates awareness about the structural hurdles which obstruct change.

Do see our brochure attached with the mail for more information.

Our theme:

The topics covered at our Symposium have included those of great relevance in India, like Sustainable Development, Education in rural India and various aspects of finance and governance in the country.

This year, our theme of "Transforming Healthcare" aims to discuss healthcare in India, and to arrive at possible solutions in two main areas:

1. Technology - Here, the mentors will discuss the advanced technology available today, the influence of big data on healthcare and the repercussions of using excessive technology in healthcare.

2. Policy - The structural roadblocks in place which restrict access to healthcare, including government policy (IPR, affordable insurance etc) and social determinants of health, like gender will be discussed in this track.

Do take a look at our website at symposium.shaastra.org

Here's the link to our teaser. To register for this event, please click here
