Even better Khabar

by Ram Ramaswamy, Vice Chancellor UoH

imagesThe news that Prof. C N R Rao has been awarded the Bharat Ratna should be warmly welcomed in our University. After all, he was conferred an honorary doctorate by us in 2005. And importantly, he has been a mentor, directly or indirectly to many of our colleagues in various science faculties at the UoH.

a56c607e-c8fb-43ae-9c52-eaff0054b27eMediumResHe was on the faculty- he was one of the stars of the department- at IIT Kanpur where I did my M. Sc. (Chemistry) in 1974. Actually, he was on the interview panel that selected me for admission in 1972 - no entrance exams then- and although I then did not know who he was, I can still remember one question he asked me then: How many molecules of water are there on earth? It was a serious enough question, and as I was grappling with estimating volumes, dividing by 18, multiplying by Avogadro's constant and doing all that I could to come up with an answer, he added: When its not raining!

I took Physical Chemistry from him the next year- he was an inspiring teacher in many ways- and over the years I have stayed in touch with him enough to be very very impressed by his tenacity and his passion for science. In Kanpur when he was already famous and had nucleated the Department of Chemistry, he was just about 40. That he has stayed current and obsessed with his science for the next four decades (and this shows no sign of abating) is phenomenal.

But the news of the Bharat Ratna to him is welcome in many many ways. It is, as he says, also a recognition of the value of science, of scholarship, of research. Having seen the institutions he has built, one could give it for that alone. And CNR does not mince his words- he is an outspoken advocate for research, and has let government after government know that funding for science is inadequate. As we all recognize only too well, funding for higher education is inadequate, and our only hope for excellence is that we get funded at reasonable levels. In the past two days alone, he has raised the sensibility of not just the political class, but indeed the public at large of the need for funds, for support. We need more champions like him.

[WhatsUpUoH] Open discussion on sexual harassment

Hello all,

As the culminating event of the "Ask me about my beard" campaign against sexual harassment, we'll be having an open discussion about sexual harassment. Prof. Suneetha Rani (Director, Centre for Women Studies) will be joining us.

We hope the discussion to be around sexual harassment, our experiences on campus, and our experiences over the last two weeks wearing the "Ask me" pin. We also hope to be discussing what is sexual harassment, what are our lived experiences of it, the several facets to it etc. It's an open discussion, so if you have something to discuss, we would love it if you could add on.

Do join us. Even if you haven't participated in the campaign, do join us for the discussion. It's at the School of Humanities Open Air Auditorium (behind the School of Humanities - enter through the gate beside the school) at 4.00pm on Friday (8th November).

We look forward to this discussion with you! If you have any doubts or queries, do contact Eleni (8498945933).

Thank you.

[WhatsUpUoH] All Users: Circular : NAAC Visit : Update

Dear Colleagues :

Good Morning!

Trust you have seen, by now, the circular sent by the Vice Chancellor to the university community to help the NAAC Steering Committee for the  forthcoming visit of the NAAC Peer Team to our campus during  8-11 January, 2014.

I shall  let you know as soon as we receive the finalized program schedule from the Chair of the Peer Team.We are in touch with them.

Meanwhile, allow me to inform all  you  that it has been decided at an apex meeting held on 4 Nov.  to have a special budget head for NAAC preparatory expenses. Support services like the Engineering, Sanitation and Horticulture have been asked by the Registrar to carry out all maintenance, repair and renovation work in an expeditious and time- bound  manner. This must be done, and done quickly.

I am sorry to say that only two units: The Center for Women's Studies and the Department of Physical Education have written to us so far regarding their needs. I request all others to kindly do so at the earliest.Pls treat this matter as urgent.

In this connection, may I appeal once again to write to the sections concerned through the Registrar with a copy to me stating the work that needs to be carried out at the earliest. The NAAC visit requires a collective effort, and we must put in our best.

I  appeal to the Students' Union, the Teachers' Association, and the Staff Union, in particular, to lend a helping hand, so that we could project our activities in the best possible manner.

Once again, please do not hesitate to get in touch with the NAAC Steering Committee (Phone 2011 in the Admn or my cell:9849672276 or e mail : smesh @uohyd.ernet.in.).

Thank you for your continued support.

Sincere Regards

New post on A central Central University

Je सोचता हूँ என்று நான் always అనుకుంటున్నాను!

by Ram Ramaswamy, Vice Chancellor UoH
A recent newspaper report caught my eye, and given my fledgling attempts to learn Telugu, it felt vaguely satisfying to read that Speaking a Second Language May Delay Dementia. But it was infinitely more satisfying to learn that the research that led to this finding was done (in part) at the UoH, in our very own CNCS, the Centre for Neural and Cognitive Sciences.
bapi2Professor Bapiraju (of the School of Computer and Information Sciences and Coordinator of CNCS) wrote in to tell me that the article in the journal Neurology (the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology) that went online yesterday was the  product of collaboration among CNCS, NIMS and Osmania University, as part of a Cognitive Science Initiative project funded by the Department of Science and Technology. The full list of authors of the paper,  Bilingualism delays age at onset of dementia, independent of education and immigration status, are Suvarna Alladi,  Thomas H. Bak,  Vasanta Duggirala, Bapiraju Surampudi,  Mekala Shailaja,  Anuj Kumar Shukla, Jaydip Ray Chaudhuri, and Subhash Kaul, Anuj Shukla being an M. Phil. student of the Centre, while the other authors are at NIMS, OU, and Edinburgh.
19.coverThe main features of the study, as summarized in the Abstract to the paper read as follows: Overall, bilingual patients developed dementia 4.5 years later than the monolingual ones. A significant difference in age at onset was found across Alzheimer disease dementia as well as frontotemporal dementia and vascular dementia, and was also observed in illiterate patients. There was no additional benefit to speaking more than 2 languages. The bilingual effect on age at dementia onset was shown independently of other potential confounding factors such as education, sex, occupation, and urban vs rural dwelling of subjects.

This is the largest study so far documenting a delayed onset of dementia in bilingual patients and the first one to show it separately in different dementia subtypes. It is the first study reporting a bilingual advantage in those who are illiterate, suggesting that education is not a sufficient explanation for the observed difference. The findings are interpreted in the context of the bilingual advantages in attention and executive functions.

UntitledThis work has captured the imagination of the entire world, it seems. A blog from Brazil says: Mais um motivo para falar inglês (ou espanhol, francês, esperanto...) namely, Another reason to speak English (or Spanish, French, Esperanto...). Newspapers across the world have picked up the article, from the NEW YORK DAILY NEWS to the LA Times... Professor Huntington Potter, Director of the Alzheimer's Disease Programs at the University of Colorado in Denver has been quoted as calling the study "very definitive" in an interview with MedPage Today. "The fact that this study was carried out in India where many people are illiterate ... and still the benefit was seen, bolsters the idea that cognitive reserve can be acquired in the absence of formal schooling," he said.

Heartening news, that. And also very heartening that this work was done in part at the University. What better way to underscore the importance of such an interdisciplinary effort! Multilingualism rocks, and je सोचता हूँ என்று நான் always అనుకుంటున్నాను!

[WhatsUpUoH] An appeal regarding firecrackers

An Appeal

Dear friends, we celebrated Diwali on Sunday, and it all went very well. Here is a little thought to ponder upon for celebrations in future.

Our campus is home to many animals and birds. They all get frightened by loud noises and fire. Many of them are forced to fly or run away from their homes. We need not take care of them or nurture them, but we are obliged to share the space responsibly with them. Firecrackers are a lot of fun for us, but unfortunately not for them.

So here is a humble appeal. Let's go easy on the firecrackers. It's not that we shouldn't celebrate... Not at all! But, we can keep in mind our feathered and furry friends while celebrating. Here are a few tips-

  • Let us use less firecrackers that are loud. Why do we need so much sound anyway!

  • Let us gather in one or two common areas, so that the damage is minimised. Open dais near Gops, Library Junction, and South Campus junction are all ideal places – surrounded by buildings and slightly removed from forests.

  • Let us not burst firecrackers near the forests and lakes. Most of our hostels are near them.

We are lucky to have such a big, beautiful, green campus. With this privilege comes the responsibility of taking care of it.

Let us think of this the next time we celebrate! Thank you.

[WhatsUpUoH] NAAC Circular

To

All Deans, Heads, Directors, Co-ordinators and Unit Heads of support services at the UoH

Sub: Visit of NAAC Peer Team to the UoH scheduled for 8-11January 2014 – Reg.

                                                                            ***

Dear Colleagues,

In my letter dated 23 April 2012, addressed to all the stakeholders of the UoH on the subject of re-accreditation by NAAC, Bangalore, I had mentioned that the fulfillment of this task was essential if we are to be eligible for a number of funding opportunities both from the UGC as well as from other agencies.

In order to prepare ourselves for the process, I had set up the NAAC Steering Committee under the Chairmanship of Professor Sachidananda Mohanty, to prepare a multi-volume Re-accreditation Report.  Aside from collecting and collating the information needed by NAAC, the Committee was also asked to identify areas where we were likely to be evaluated.

The NAAC Committee has completed its primary task – the two volume report has been successfully submitted to NAAC, Bangalore and it is on display on our website.

We now have to prepare ourselves for the visit of the NAAC Peer Team to our campus during 8-11 January 2014. Professor Mohanty has written to the Deans, HoDs, Directors/ Co-ordinators of all Schools/Departments/Centres suggesting a plan of action for visit of the team in early January 2014.

I am sure that we will give full support to the NAAC Committee so that we could project the activities and achievements of our University in a fitting and honest manner. The NAAC reaccreditation is matter of high priority, and I hope that it will help us to evaluate ourselves and also to see how best to develop our University further.
