The H.K. Sherwani Centre for Deccan Studies is organizing a two day international symposium on the overarching theme of Networks in the Deccan on 30th and 31st January 2017 at the Conference Hall of H.K. Sherwani Centre for Deccan Studies, Maulana Azad National Urdu University, Hyderabad.

 

Keeping in line with the Centre's plans to establish enduring linkages with various faculties working on dynamic aspects of the Deccan, this symposium is an attempt to explore the historical, cultural, and commercial connections between different geographical regions of the Deccan and beyond cutting across time.

WORKSHOP & EXHIBITION by Katharina Kakar


WORKSHOP | WALK LIKE A GIRL | 27 JAN 11 AM – 1 PM |

Katharina Kakar's workshop will inspire confidence through self expression and be accepting of and valuing diversity. The workshops will involve youth, young adults and adults to think about gender and connect to their own imagination through creative activity.


EXHIBITION | CROSSING THE LAKSHMANA REKHA – SHAKTI, SENSUALITY, SEXUALITY: ART INSTALLATIONS BY KATHARINA KAKAR
Katharina Kakar
lives in India for 20 years, as a writer, an academic and an artist. Her exhibition tells multiple stories about women that emerge from her own personal sense of India.

STAGE TALK | BUILDING & UNBUILDING WORLDS | 27 JAN, 12 PM – 12.50 PM 

Jaideep and Harshomohan will show how creating a graphic novel is similar to generating a self-contained world, they are often at the junction of journalism, architecture, photography, and film.


WORKSHOP | WRITING COMICS | 29 JAN, 10 AM – 12 PM
A workshop on decoding comics and the mechanics of creating panels and layouts, all from a practitioner's point of view. Participants will learn all about the basics of writing for sequential art, and will work to finish a one-page script by the end of the workshop.


EXHIBITION | EVERY CITY IS A STORY: GRAPHIC ARTWORKS
A city is more than the sum of its buildings and roads and monuments and people. A city is also an act of the imagination. This exhibition will show how the city is fractured and torn apart through panels and gutter spaces only to be reassembled in the viewer's imagination.

Hamburg's new design centre was initiated in 2002 by committed representatives of the Hamburg Design Economy, to create a permanent public location for current design and a meeting point for designers. 



RADIO REVOLTEN: Stage Talk & Workshop & Radio Booth


STAGE TALK | RADIO ART
| 29 JAN, 2 PM – 2.50 PM
A discussion on experimental radio art. Prof. Vinod Pavarala, the UNESCO Chair on Community Media at University of Hyderabad, would be in conversation with Ralf Wendt and Michael Nicolai of Radio Corax in Halle, Germany, on the nature of radio art and the recently concluded International Radio Art Festival, Radio Revolten.

EXHIBITION | RADIO ART
HLF will have specified sound stations, where Ralf Wendt and Michael Nicolai from Radio Revolten, Germany, will curate some radio art, with special emphasis on audio engagement with modern and contemporary German literature.


TISHANI DOSHI: Stage Talk & Exhibition


STAGE TALK | AN ACCIDENTAL DANCER | 29 JAN, 12 PM – 12.50 PM
Tishani Doshi is an award-winning poet, novelist and dancer. She has been working with the legendary dancer Chandralekha's dance troupe since 2001, at the age of 26. A stage talk with Tishani titled 'An accidental dancer - My years with Chandra' will focus on Chandralekha's enduring question - 'Where does the body begin and end?'


EXHIBITION | A TRIBUTE TO CHANDRALEKHA: PHOTOGRAPHS BY DASHRATH PATEL AND SADANAND MENON
Chandralekha's choreography constitutes a deep interrogation of the Bharatanatyam form in a proscenium space as well as its mechanically interpreted mythological content. A few of her photographs-large and small will be displayed as part of the commemorative tribute.

Hyderabad Literary Festival 2017 announces the details and schedule of the WORKSHOPS:


SILAMBAM | 29 JAN, 11 AM – 12 PM
During this workshop, one gets an insight into the history of Silambam and learn the basics through stick rotations, footwork and movements from Aishwarya Manivannan. Experience this full-bodied activity through a hands-on practise session of Silambam. 


PAINTING WORKSHOP | 27 JAN, 11 AM – 12 PM | 28 JAN, 10 AM – 11 AM & 12 PM – 1 PM
In this workshop Avish lets us 'unlearn' what we have been taught about art. Let us explore the inner child inside us and fly way in an imaginary world full of colours in the formless language of abstraction. 


THE CHILDREN'S FINE ART GALLERY | 27 JAN, 10 AM – 11 PM & 2 PM – 3 PM | 28 JAN, 11 AM – 12 PM & 3 PM – 4 PM |29 JAN, 12 PM – 1 PM, 3 PM – 4 PM
The workshop will give students a brief introduction to one contemporary Indian artist followed by an exercise based on the artist's paintings. A Daira Initiative. 


STORYTELLING | 27 JAN, 10 AM – 12 PM | 28 JAN 2 PM – 4 PM
Deepa Kiran is a storyteller, educationalist, writer and founder of Story Arts India. The art of storytelling will be followed by a lecture demonstration model, which will also be interactive in nature. Participants-children and adults, will be encouraged to share stories with each other.


WRITING COMICS | 29 JAN, 10 AM – 12 PM

The workshop connects art with literature through creativity. The words from the mind of the participants can be transformed into pieces of art created by them. Their contribution will get to be part of a bigger installation that a lot more people will get to view and appreciate at a larger scale. 


DOODLE WORKSHOP | 28 JAN 11 AM – 12 PM & 2 PM – 3 PM
Doodles are everywhere. Doodles are fun. Doodles are art, one on one. The workshop, by Kanishka Dasgupta, is open to anyone who loves doodle as an art form. Both for relaxation and fun, the workshop enables you to free your mind, and to do 'oodles of doodles'.

Neha Parikh is an independent artist from Sir J. J. School of Art, Mumbai. She will hold workshops in Warli painting and cartooning, which will be interactive in nature - with the participants being encouraged to churn out their own ideas.

Dipankar Mukherjee will hold an interesting session on creative writing- to understand the basics and pick up some tips to get your story out. A session to learn the tricks of the trade to ensure that your book is marketed well and to the right audience by the team from Readomania.

SHUDRKA HYDERABAD | 29 JAN, 2 PM – 5 PM
Performing since 2004, will be conducting a workshop on the use of a series of physical exercises which will help release psycho-physical energy in exploring a situation or a character. 


FROM PAGE TO STAGE: THE PHILIPPINES | 27 JAN, 3 PM – 4 PM
Performed literature exists to value all the written and spoken literatures. It celebrates the best and the brightest performances on Filipino and foreign literatures. This workshop will be held by Jeena Rani Marquez, Nerisa Guevara, Vim Nadera. 


TRANCREATION AND THEATRE: THE PHILIPPINES | 28 JAN, 4 PM – 5 PM

Translation is creation. Creation is translation. Or both. As one. Especially on stage. These days, the Philippines theatre scene is unstoppable. Groups based in schools, communities and churches around the country are responsible for its growth.


THEATRE WORKSHOP | 28 JAN, 10 AM – 1 PM

The basic idea of this theatre workshop by Vaishali Bisht is to explore various techniques of translating text into movement, unpacking it through an engagement of both body and voice which will prove rewarding for the readers and performers alike.

ABOUT CHANDAN DAS

Chandan Das, a thalassaemia major and cancer patient, teaches English in Shailabala Women's College, Cuttack, Odisha. His PhD in Translation Studies (2008) is from Utkal University. His poems, short stories, and articles have appeared in national and international journals such as Indian Literature and South Asian Review. His own life story, The Road Taken was published in 2014. He has translated Fakir Mohan Senapati's iconic Odia novel, Lachhama (2013), and Chandrasekhar Raths' award-winning novel, Asurya Upanibesa (The Sunless Land; 2015). He has been selected for the "Subrat Rath Smaraki Puraskar" (2016) by the Gangadhar Rath Foundation, Cuttack, for his translations.



ABOUT FLORENDA PEDRO/DUMA SOLINGGAY

Florenda Pedro/Dumay Solinggay is a 26 year-old Kankanaey-Igorot, one of the Indigenous Peoples group in the mountain region of Northern Philippines. She is a member of UBBOG Cordillera Writers, a literary group based in Baguio City, Philippines, whose endeavour is to write in the indigenous languages of the Cordillera region. She writes and performs poetry in Kankanaey, Ilokano, and English. She is also a visual, dance, and performance artist.
