[WhatsUpUoH] United States and European Patents for Prof. K A Padmanabhan and Prof. M Ghanashyam Krishna

United States and European Patents for Prof. K A Padmanabhan and Prof. M Ghanashyam Krishna

K.A. Padmanabhan and M. Ghanashyam Krishna, faculty members in the School of Engineering Sciences and Technology and Physics, respectively, of University of Hyderabad (UoH), have received United States and European patents for ‘Non-Stoichiometric Titanium Nitride films' along with Dr. M.S.R.N. Kiran (a former PhD Student of the School of Physics, UoH).

The application for the patents were submitted in 2008, awarded a WIPO number in 2009, European Patent in October 2013 and the US Patent in July 2014.  The patent application and process was funded and facilitated by TIFAC a division of the Department of Science and Technology, GoI.

The patent deals with a process for the manufacture of transparent, large band gap, high refractive index and high temperature stable non-stoichiometric titanium nitride thin films. These films exhibit different colours such as blue, magenta, brown and golden yellow, which makes them very attractive for decorative applications including artificial jewellery, watches etc. The reflectance of these films in the visible region of the spectrum can be tuned to values close to zero, which can be extremely useful as anti-reflecting coatings. The large band gap of 3.7 to 4.5 eV is expected to make these materials applicable in thin film LEDS used for solid-state lighting. The films can be deposited on a large variety of surfaces (such as glass, quartz, silicon, stainless steel, magnesium oxide and sapphire) that are used in the microelectronic, optical, optoelectronic industries. The films are stable up to 600°C. This permits the use of these coatings in space applications also. The extreme hardness and biocompatibility of these coatings allows medical applications possible. The University is in the process of transferring technology based on this patent to M/s Advanced Process Technology, Ltd., Pune for commercialization.

Prof. Padmanabhan, a former Director of IIT Kanpur is an eminent world-renowned metallurgist/ materials engineer and is currently a University Chair Professor in the School of Engineering Sciences and Technology, UoH. Prof. M. Ghanashyam Krishna is a PhD from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and has been on the faculty of the School of Physics, UOH since 2001. Dr. M.S.R.N Kiran completed his PhD from the School of Physics, UoH under the joint supervision Profs. Padmanabhan and Krishna and is currently at the Department of Electronic Materials Engineering, Australian National University, Canberra, Australia.  The inventors share interests in nanomaterials, thin films and industrial applications of advanced materials.

[WhatsUpUoH] Inaugural Lecture by Prof. P. Jyothi, 22.07.2014 -Reg

University of Hyderabad

Inaugural Lecture

by

Professor P Jyothi

Faculty, School of Management Studies

will speak on

“Impact of Micro Entrepreneurial Development on Women Empowerment”

on

Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at 3.30 pm

Venue: Conference Hall, School of Management Studies

Lecture Abstract

Government of India has made several attempts to improve financial access and to reduce poverty. In this endeavour the policies of the Government and the intermediaries like the financial institutions play a key role. Financial access in the rural areas has become a reality through the formulation and functioning of Self-Help Groups (SHG’s).

Indian economy is characterized by low rate of growth, dominance of rural population, adverse land mass ratio, heavy dependency on agriculture, concentration of industries in urban areas, highly skewed distribution of income and wealth beside, high incidence of poverty and unemployment. The last two factors, poverty and unemployment, pose major challenges to the growth and prosperity of the country. To overcome this problem, some newly developed sectors like Micro Finance are playing a vital role. Micro Finance is one of the most efficient and effective tools to fight poverty. The benefits of Micro Finance reach to the beneficiaries through the mechanism of Self–Help Group (SHG). SHG is a small group of poor people, who have voluntarily come forward to form a group for improvement of social and economic status of the members.

The uniqueness of the Micro Finance through SHG is a partnership based approach which encouraged NGOs to undertake not only social engineering but also financial intermediation especially in areas where banking network was not satisfactory. The rapid progress achieved in SHG formation has now turned into an empowering movement among women.

Government of India has initiated several skill development and training programmes in various dimensions of poverty alleviation schemes. The present research aims to study the impact and challenges experienced in the process of entrepreneurial training programmes. Addressing these issues would probably enhance the empowerment of women and enable them to establish Micro Enterprises. Practitioners and policy makers would also be interested in the study as it would bring out an important area of focus in the objectives of Micro Finance.

Inaugural lectures, delivered by newly appointed Professors of the University, will be colloquia on their research interests for the benefit of colleagues and students from all disciplines.

[WhatsUpUoH] Integrated Masters student of UoH publishes in top International Journal

Dear All,

Integrated Masters student of UoH publishes in top International Journal

K. Nireekshan Reddy, an Integrated Masters student at the School of Physics, University of Hyderabad (UoH), is involved in research on the forefront areas of Optics dealing with complete absorption of light by nano-structures. He has demonstrated that the incident laser power can control the prefect absorption process. His findings have been published as four research articles in the prestigious International Journal: Optics Letters.

Nireekshan has also presented his work in an International conference in Capri, Italy, for which he got financial support from Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). We have seen new results in the research relating to the emerging areas of parity-time PT symmetric optics and soon it will result in one more publication in an International Journal, says Nireekshan who is currently engaged in writing a review article on his research on perfect absorption.

Nireekshan completed his schooling from Kendriya Vidyalaya, Ordinance Factory in Medak District and has always been one of the toppers of his class. His interest in the area of Optics made him to opt for UoH for his five-year Integrated Master's Programme in Physics. Nireekshan says that for pursuing research one needs to be focused and is thankful to have got mentored by Prof. S. Dutta Gupta, a senior optics faculty at the School of Physics. His parents have been instrumental in motivating him to pursue research and at present, he has several invitations from top Institutes in India and abroad for the Ph.D program.

Nireekshan strongly believes that Indian students who are getting trained abroad should try to come back to their country so that they can contribute and share their knowledge.

His papers can be seen at 1) http://www.opticsinfobase.org/ol/abstract.cfm?uri=ol-38-14-2517 ; 2) http://www.opticsinfobase.org/ol/abstract.cfm?uri=ol-38-24-52523) http://www.opticsinfobase.org/ol/abstract.cfm?uri=ol-39-8-2254 and Fourth paper is in press but can be seen at http://www.opticsinfobase.org/ol/upcoming_pdf.cfm?id=212913
