[WhatsUpUoH] Rejoinder to Mail from UHTA dated 14 Sept. 2015

Dear All,

I stated on the Friday night on the site of UHTA protest that the proceeding of the Security Committee held on 11th Sept 2015, approved by VC, would be circulated to all. The same is attached to this mail. The content of it, signed by UHTA, Officers and Non-teaching Employees, with Vice-Chancellor's remarks, is self explanatory.

Dear colleague,

We are writing to update you on the outcome of the protest against the illegal raid of the residence of Dr. Gracious Temsen.

The Relay Hunger Strike by the teachers that began on 10.9.15 has been temporarily called off from 12.9.15. The prolonged protest of two months supported by a large number of teachers was put on hold after the Vice-Chancellor came to the site of protest and apologized for the unfortunate incident. The Vice-Chancellor's written note admitted to procedural lapses. A committee constituted unilaterally by the administration, with prejudicial terms of reference, also stands dismantled.

As you know the administration had adopted a rigid stand, unwilling to accept responsibility for the injustice done to Dr. Grace. However, the unwavering protest by faculty culminating in the relay hunger strike, created sufficient moral pressure on the adamant administration, forcing it to respond to sentiments of the faculty. We acknowledge the role played by the security committee and for its timely intervention. We convey our appreciation to Dr. Gracious Temsen for her spirit and courage throughout this struggle.

UHTA will seek the official circulation of VC's regret letter to the University Community. We hope the administration will initiate programs for sensitizing the campus community in general and university officials in particular about discriminations based on class, community and gender. UHTA reiterates that dialogue and internal mechanisms are the best modes of resolving differences. We deeply appreciate all the teachers and the University community at large for their sustained support for the struggle.

Thank you for the solidarity and support.

K Laxminarayana Deepa Sreenivas

President, UHTA General Secretary, UHTA
