Workshop on S&T Policy for women scientists at IISER Pune : 31st March to 2nd April 2016

A three-day introductory workshop on Science Policy is being organised on 31st March to 2nd April 2016 for women scientists, who are interested in exploring a career in policy, management and administration. Often these career paths are pursued by students of management, with little or no understanding of science and its impact on society. This workshop aims to attract science students to learn necessary skills so that science and its methods are widely used in all policy decisions for better governance and public good. With the expansion of higher education system, increased use of technology in daily life, the immediate need to take corrective steps to reverse climate change and the importance of scientific temper in the society, it is imperative that there would be newer career opportunities for suitably trained scientists in policy and/or management.

The proposed workshop is divided into three parts. It will start with an introduction to the decision-making processes. The second part is focused on science for policy, wherein the discussion would be on how to bring science in all policy decisions. While it is understandable that science alone cannot be the basis of decision-making, a better understanding of relevant scientific issues would help informed and rational debate during policy decisions. Finally, the workshop will discuss policy for science, wherein various aspects of policy decisions needed to expand the scientific enterprise in any society and develop suitable mechanism for improving the quality of scientific output in any organisation.

This workshop would be conducted by a team of experienced faculty of the Department of Science, Technology, Engineering and Public Policy; University College, London. The workshop is restricted to only 40 participants as it involves in-depth discussions, assignments and assessments. All participants are issued a certificate of participation. While a 3-day workshop itself may not constitute full training to take up a job in science policy and/or management, it may motivate the participants to opt for a long term training program in relevant topics and skills.

The workshop is sponsored by a generous grant by The British Council to promote newer career opportunities for women scientists.

Eligibility: Women students/scientists who have completed MS or MSc (with 6 to 12 month research project as part of their degree), or completed or pursuing PhD (who are in their 3rd year or above) or pursuing post-doctoral research. Those who fulfil any of the criteria above and are already employed in a scientific organisation may apply too. Upper age limit is 35 years.

All registered participants are expected to commit three full days to attend the workshop and be actively involved in all discussions and assignments. There is no registration fee. Accommodation (for outstation participants) and boarding, would be provided free of cost.

Those who are interested to attend may kindly send a one page write up outlining (i) why you are interested in this workshop and (ii) why you think you would be a right participant for this workshop along with the biodata to coesme@iiserpune.ac.in on or before 10th March 2016.
