Second Press release from University of Hyderabad on 23 March 2016
After an attack by the students on the non-teaching staff on 22 March 2016 the latter have gone on demonstration demanding strong action against those students who were involved. This has led to closure of messes in the hostels and the students have not been able to have food from the dinner time yesterday.
The Vice-Chancellor Prof. Appa Rao Podile called a meeting of all faculty members at 10:00 a.m. at VC's lodge. A large number of faculty (around 200) attended the meeting. The Vice-Chancellor and the faculty requested the non-teaching staff to call off their boycott and help resume services to hostels on humanitarian ground, as the hostel-boarders are put to a lot of inconvenience. However, the employees stood their ground because the students crossed all the limits yesterday.
However, as desired by the Vice-Chancellor, JAC-Non-Teaching Employees were persuaded by few faculty members, accordingly, the JAC in order to bring the normalcy and to restore the services in the Hostel put forth the following resolutions:
1. The committee is of the opinion that an unconditional apology in writing be obtained from the Joint Action Committee (Students) on manhandling three of Dalit Non-Teaching Staff and abusing them in unparliamentarily language.
2. The committee also resolved to obtain an endorsement of the Chief Warden, Dy. Chief Warden and Dean, Students' Welfare on such apology letter of JAC (Students) with an undertaking to the effect that they will take the responsibility of security of Non-teaching staff working in hostels and further resolved that the Administration shall give an assurance in writing with regard to the security of Non-teaching staff in general.
3. The committee resolved that all the unauthorized residents of hostels shall be vacated from the hostels within one week from today, if necessary by taking the help of Academic Section, security and police officials. The committee felt that it is most important aspect in resolving various issues on the campus.
4. The Committee resolved to evolve a mechanism by framing necessary rules by the Administration in consultation with respective wardens and also by involving Non-teaching staff to curtail the element of indiscipline and misbehavior with the staff by the students.
5. The Committee felt that it is necessary to conduct a monthly meeting by the Chief Warden/Warden to redress the grievances of Non-Teaching staff working to the hostels by involving the concerned staff.
The University would like to clarify that the protest by the Non-Teaching Staff was as a result of physical manhandling of staff by some students. These above conditions put forth by the non-teaching JAC are because they have been victimized. The demonstration by the Non-teaching staff is to show their solidarity towards the institution and Head of the institution and for self-respect. There was no deliberate attempt by the employees to cut down water or electricity to the hostels.
After a long discussion with the DSW, Chief Warden, Deputy Chief Warden, Wardens and Deputy Dean, Students Welfare and other faculty members, with the Students Union leaders it was realized that the students wanted more time to give assurances to the employees JAC. However, keeping in view of the larger interest of students difficulties the employees JAC has accepted the special request from Vice Chancellor, DSW and Chief Warden to take necessary assurance from Chief Warden have agreed to resume duties from 24th March morning by calling of the protest. The Vice Chancellor while appreciating the good will gesture of the employees JAC reassured that Chief Warden will make all out effort to evacuate unauthorized boarders from the hostels.
