[WhatsUpUoH] BOTNET INFECTED IPs From our Network and REMIDIAL STEPS to be taken- Reg.

Dear All,

It is to inform all the campus network users that we are getting a lot of warning mails
from our ISP NKN about BOTNET INFECTED IPs from our network.

A brief note about "botnet" and "countermeasures" for it is given below to secure your systems.

A botnet is a network of compromised machines called "bots" that can be remotely controlled by an attacker.

These machines can be used by attackers to launch DDoS attacks, sending Spam messages, infecting other machines or
to engage in various other kinds of malicious activities.

Popular media for controlling botnets are IRC channel, P2P network and HTTP.
When the malware runs, it turns the infected system into a bot connecting to
an C&C server (A command and control server).        Bot infected systems are
connecting to the C&C Servers on specific ports and listen for commands from remote attacker.

In view of the high damage potential of Botnet infected machines,
CNF advise all the campus network users to disinfect your systems and
take appropriate countermeasures suggested below to prevent such incidents in future.

Countermeasures:
1. Install and maintain updated anti-virus and anti-spyware software at desktop level.
2. Scan computer system with updated anti-virus for possible infections and disinfect the same.
3. Install and maintain personal desktop firewall.
4. Use only genuine software.
5. Keep up-to-date patches and fixes on the operating system and application software.
6. Exercise caution while opening email attachments.
7. Do not browse un-trusted websites or follow un-trusted links and excercise caution while click on the link provided in any unsolicited emails.

With Regards,

CNF Team.

[WhatsUpUoH] UoH ranked high among India’s Best Universities

UoH ranked high among India's Best Universities

UoH is at number four in the country and number one in South

Survey includes State, Central, Private and Deemed Universities

More than 500 Universities surveyed as part of the research

Various parameters including Age & Accreditation, infrastructure & other facilities, intellectual resource, research, student quality, alumni & industry exposure, and placements considered for ranking

The city-based University of Hyderabad (UoH) has been ranked high among the best Universities in the Country. The HANSA-WEEK research survey for the year 2016 has ranked UoH at fourth position. Maintaining its position at number four that it got in 2015, UoH ranks high in the top 75 Multidisciplinary Universities of the Country that include State, Central, Private and Deemed Universities.

University of Delhi, Jawahar Lal Nehru University (JNU) and Banaras Hindu University are at number one, two and three respectively.

UoH is ranked at the first position among the top multidisciplinary Universities in the South.

"We are pleased with the consistent rank in the top slot by different survey teams. Our faculty, students and staff are delighted over such status for the University", said Prof. Appa Rao Podile, Vice-Chancellor, UoH. We have unique features that will further be strengthened to reach even greater heights, he added.

The WEEK_HANSA research Best Universities survey 2016 was conducted by collecting factual information from more than 500 leading Universities in India. 217 academic experts, across 20 cities were asked to nominate and rank top Universities. Nine qualitative in-depth interviews were done among these experts to validate the collected data and to provide the rationale for ranking. Various parameters including Age & Accreditation, infrastructure & other facilities, intellectual resource, research, student quality, alumni & industry exposure, and placements were used to calculate the factual score. The composite score has been arrived at by combining the perceptual and the factual scores to determine the final rank for each University.

The overall result of the survey has been published in the Week magazine issue dated May 29, 2016.

If Library can be open on Saturdays and Sundays, then why not the computers? I am sure on working days you don't have a special technician to look after the computers. There might be some switch which needs to ON during Saturdays and Sundays as like other working days. Your staff who keep reading newspapers or nod there throughout the day can look after the computers too.

So, dear sir, its not a big deal. Please keep the computers ON during Saturdays and Sundays. It will be helpful for many students. Or else what is the point of having computers there.

Further, the WiFi is not working in library from couple of weeks, can you please make sure that it becomes functional soon.

Next Saturday, while I walk into the library, will be glad if the computers are ON and Wifi working. Or else I will bring it into the notice of higher authorities.

Thanks a lot.

Re: [WhatsUpUoH] Why Computers Are Closed on Saturdays and Sundays at IGML?

Abu, I would imagine that you would by now know the secret to surviving on campus - ask for paperwork!

If someone tells you "No computers on Saturday and Sunday!", just go ahead and flip the switch on, and ask them to show you a signed and sealed order which says deems that computers should not be switched on during the weekends. When they inevitably say they don't have it, and yet insist on their babugiri, ask them to write a letter saying they wilfully denied you access, sign it with the date, and give it to you. By then, most people should back off. If they don't, you back off, but humour us by sharing the letter they wrote :) Also send a copy to the VC, cc The President, cc most news media.

P.S: the main switch for the computers and router is on the right side, above the last computer.

Sir,
I am a student of 4th year I.M.Sc at Life Sciences.I have been facing the same problems since a couple of weeks , I also thought of mailing the librarian regarding those issues.Apart from them , I had another in my mind.Being a PG student ,  during semesters , we will be having classes and labs  all the day ,hardly 2-3 hrs I get to study in the library. If the lab experiment prolongs , it is impossible .The vacation is the only time when one can spend the entire day in the library without any break. But why do they close the library very early during vacations?I think it will be a very good decision if the library is open till 12 , even during the vacations. It will be very helpful for students who wish to study , especially PG students.I wanted to share my suggestion with you.

Thanking You,

Ratna.
