Structures and Signs of Play: Derrida/Deconstruction@50

A Symposium

10 Nov. 2016

ASIHSS Hall, Dept. of English

10 AM onwards

21st October 1966 was the third day of the Johns Hopkins Conference, 'The Language of Criticism and the Sciences of Man'. On this, the last day of the Conference, Jacques Derrida delivered his 'Structure, Sign and Play in the Discourse of the Human Sciences', an essay widely believed to have inaugurated the end of Structuralism and the beginning of Deconstruction, a school of thought often associated with Derrida. On the 50th anniversary of this epochal conference paper, five speakers from three disciplines will examine and debate the legacies, such as they are, of Jacques Derrida and Deconstruction at this day-long Symposium.

The D5 (Derrida 5):

K. Narayana Chandran, English, UoH, 'Playing Into Derrida's Hands: A Teacher's Report on "Structure, Sign and Play in the Discourse of the Human Sciences" '.

Jibu Mathew George, Indian and World Literatures, EFLU,  'The Word and the World: Deconstruction in the History of Ideas'.

A. Raghuramaraju, Philosophy, UoH, 'The Variance between Derrida's Legacy Inside and Outside the West.'

P. Thirumal, Communications, UoH, 'Derrida and the Mediagogical'.

D. Venkat Rao, English, EFLU, 'Countersigning Commemoration: The After Life of Jacques Derrida Elsewhere'.
