[WhatsUpUoH] CRS Discussion Friday 6th Nov at 3 pm -Reg

CENTRE FOR REGIONAL STUDIES, SCHOOL OF SOCIAL SCIENCES

INVITES YOU TO A DISCUSSION

"THE MAKING OF AMARAVATI: The Role of Land Speculation and Intimidation"

When: Friday, 6 November 2015, 3:00- 4:30 p.m.

Venue: Conference Hall, School of Social Sciences

Speaker– Prof. C. Ramachandraiah

(Centre for Economic and Social Studies (CESS), Hyderabad)

Discussant- Prof. Sujata Patel (Department of Sociology, UoH)

About the Speaker: Prof. C. Ramachandraiah is Professor of Urban Studies and has authored over 25 research papers and a book. He advocates "course correction" for projects such as Metrorail, Hyderabad & now for A.P.'s capital City-Amaravati.

About the Talk: Once AP's new capital city location was announced to be spread over 25 villages and four hamlets in Tullur, Tadepally and Mangalagiri mandals in Guntur district, the real estate speculators started raising the land values exorbitantly. Ever since the Singapore consultants submitted the master plan for Amaravati on 20 July, computer graphic images of the new city have been appearing prominently in the media, in the official brochures/invitations and the newly set up Amaravati Pavilion at the site of the foundation. What has been conveniently hidden from the public is a Note on these graphics (in the master plan) that these are artistic impressions only. To project Amaravati as a future mega city, the master plan makes highly speculative and unrealistic projections on population growth and employment generation.
