[WhatsUpUoH] 500 and counting -Reg

500 and counting

April 22, 2014 marks as a milestone in the journey of the UoH Herald, the bilingual online newsletter of the University of Hyderabad. It is on that day that the 500th posting was done on the UoH Herald since its launch in January 2013, a feat which it can boast of when it comes to such publications brought out by the educational institutions in the country.

The idea of having an online newsletter at the UoH was conceived by the PR office sometime in September-October 2012, in consultation with the Communication Department of the University. The Vice-Chancellor immediately approved the idea and the fact that this will help in saving time, paper and money, helped the task being pursued vigorously. Accordingly, we ran a pilot version for three weeks in December 2012 on WordPress and the actual online bilingual newsletter began functioning in January 2013.

The initial reactions to the look and content of the newsletter were very encouraging and this helped our office to make effort to report the academic events happening on the campus on the same day. We also had an attractive bilingual logo prepared for the newsletter. Keeping in line with the Official Languages Act, the newsletter is being published in Hindi and English, a feat no other University has been able to match so far. Our Hindi Cell has been on dot translating the matter so that the Hindi version can also be posted on the same day or a day later.

The online newsletter has sections pertaining to distinguished lectures, faculty honours, student achievements, visits, book releases and happenings. One interesting feature has been the Alumni who have come forward to write about their experiences at UoH in Herald. Their writings give a wonderful feeling for all of us and we hope it will serve as an encouragement for many of our students to do well at the University and in life too.

The beginning has been good and some of our students have been regularly contributing to the newsletter. I must specially make a mention of Research Scholars Abu Saleh and Kumar Ashish who even report their department/school seminars and events. We look forward to contributions from others as well. This is our University newsletter and all of us need to work and contribute to make it successful and a model for other institutions to follow.

UoH Herald has helped in presenting a comprehensive view of all around happenings at the University and has emerged as a one stop destination to get a glimpse of Campus activities on regular basis. All updates at the newsletter are also shared on social media platforms such as Facebook (facebook.com/uohyd), Twitter (twitter.com/UoH1974) etc. and attract a large number of visitors viewing these posts. It is requested that all the stakeholders of the University including officials, teachers, non-teaching staff, students and especially alumni can share their events and activities. Alumni can share their memory of the university including some old pictures taken at the university. This is not only a newsletter but a platform where activities, events and memories get documented and are available to one and all at a click from anywhere around the globe.

By the time this reaches you, we have published 520 articles. Please do contribute to UoH Herald (uohherald.commuoh.in) by sending mail to pro@uohyd.ac.in
