[WhatsUpUoH] Grow your beard in support of preventing sexual harassment!

Grow your beard in support of preventing sexual harassment!

Men! Here is a campaign against sexual harassment which needs your support. It's easy and cool to participate! Here's what you need to do-

1. Understand what is and what constitutes sexual harassment; pledge your support in preventing it
2. Grow your beard (do not shave!) for the next two weeks (from Oct 23rd)
3. Get and wear our cool "moustache badge" every day for the two weeks
4. When people ask you about the pin, or your beard, tell them about sexual harassment and why it should be prevented

We are doing this to spread awareness about sexual harassment, and to get more men involved in the cause using one-on-one dialogue.

We'll be standing at Gops (23-Wednesday), Shop Com (24-Thursday)and Student Canteen (25-Friday ) with the moustache badges and more info (4-7pm)! Do visit us and participate!

Please invite others to share this event!

I believe:
  • Men and women are human. They should be understood as humans first. They should have equal rights - socially, culturally, and politically.
  • Any sexual activity should take place with enthusiastic consent
  • That sexual violence is a human problem which has a solution
  • It comes in many forms- unwelcome looks, gestures, approaches, comments, stalking, groping, assault etc. The key word is "unwelcome".

I understand that:

  • One in four women is a survivor of sexual assault
  • 10% of sexual abuse survivors are male
  • Rape is about power and control
  • Society trivialises the problem of rape. Blame is put on the survivor. It is more of a social problem than an individual problem.
  • Therefore I pledge my support to ending sexual violence.
  • I will empathise with survivors of all forms of sexual violence including acquaintance rape, street harassment, emotional coercion, physical coercion, stalking, emotional manipulation
  • Finally, I believe that through my participation and education, I too am helping to end sexual violence.
