Title

"BEYOND TOLERATION:CIVILITY AND PRINCIPLED DISTANCE IN ASOKAN EDICTS"

Abstract: One of the distinctive features of the Indian sub-continent is its rich religious diversity. Here I examine onepolitical response to deep religious and philosophical diversity in third centurybce, a period of great intellectual turmoil, conflict and innovation, Emperor Asoka issued edicts that advised people of all religious faiths to live together and claimed that the condition of sociability is fulfilled by all religious and philosophical perspectives as values of self-restraint and self-purification are available as resource in each. In the public arena, this translates into restraint of speech and civility towards one another, an advice that holds lessons even today. My presentation situates edicts 7 and 12 in their intellectual context and offers a detailed account of why they were required.

DATE / TIME: 22rd  JANUARY 2014 AT 3.00  P.M.
