Re: [WhatsUpUoH] An open letter to the University Engineer
--Dear Mr University Engineer,Have you heard of float valves? They cost Rs 100-200 and are available at most hardware stores. It takes a plumber less than 10 minutes to install one. They are used to prevent overflow in water tanks. This is a daily scene from K hostel. Water overflows from tanks like this for 2-4 hours. Now how much water is that?1 litre per three seconds. (yes, we measured. Thrice, and took an average, rounded to the nearest half-second).Which is 20 litres per minute. 1200 litres per hour. Which is 4800 litres per day (assuming that this happens only for 4 hours a day, sometimes it is more). One month, and numerous complaints later, water continues to flow. In fact, it continues to flow not just here, but in I hostel (has been quotidian since at least a year now), and several other places on campus. (no, we did not write a letter, but does the university administration need us to get a letter signed by 500 people, submit it in quadruplicate with a Rs 20 SBI challan, and sit on a hunger strike before people get up from their bureaucratic bottoms and fix float valves?)Do you realise that this continues to happen when drought has been declared in five states already in our country? 40% of districts in India has received deficient rainfall this year. Our own Telangana has received 20% decreased rainfall. Crops are failing, farmers are committing suicide, and our university prefers to waste thousands of litres of water every day. Please, get a few float valves and fix these tanks. Let us stop wasting so much water apathetically.tend to beat the entire point of water purification, and leaves students in these hostels wondering about that weird algal taste in the water they drink. What are you waiting for? An outbreak of Legionnaires disease?(this photo is from the K hostel water purifier on the roof. Three months and numerous complaints later.)Yours sincerely,A disgruntled student.

[WhatsUpUoH] Fwd: Accessibility Summit | Shaastra 2017 | IIT Madras
From: Shaastra, IIT Madras <studentrelations@shaastra.org>
Date: Sat, Nov 19, 2016 at 12:35 PM
Subject: Accessibility Summit | Shaastra 2017 | IIT Madras
To: abusalehenglish@gmail.com
IIT Madras' annual technical festival is back, and this time it promises to be an unparalleled experience. We request you to send this mail to all the students in your college. We invite students from your college to participate in the Accessibility Summit set to be held during Shaastra at IIT Madras.
India's largest student-run festival, Shaastra, is back with a plethora of events, workshops, professional shows, exhibitions, lectures, demonstrations and the Accessibility Summit.
The Summit of Shaastra is a 4-day event focussed on bringing students from across the country to provide solutions to some pressing problems faced by Indian society. This year, the Summit is set to adopt the theme of Accessibility and Assistive Technology.
The Accessibility Summit will hold a case study competition and a social enterprise competition, both of which will compel the participants to address the issue of Accessibility and come up with workable solutions. While the case study competition is a chance for contestants to analyse a particular situation and present their observations, the social enterprise competition will provide opportunity to innovative individuals to devise a model and find ways to implement it. Prize money worth ₹ 75,000 is up for grabs.
With an array of lectures, workshops, panel discussion, and exclusive mentoring and networking, Accessibility Summit promises to be a marvelous confluence of leaders who want to bring about a change. Participants will also get to witness India's first ever Hackathon for the Visually Impaired.
Shaastra is set to be held from 31st December, 2016 to 3rd January, 2017.
To find out more about IIT Madras' Accessibility Summit, visit our website here or follow us on facebook. You can also watch our teaser here.
All interested students can register here.
If you have any queries, reach out to us at summitregistrations@shaastr
