University of Hyderabad to host the Birth Centenary of the legendary ghazal and thumri-dadra virtuoso, Begum Akhtar

The first of the three festivals planned in the country will be held on 3 & 4 July 2015 at University of Hyderabad

 

The date 7 October 2014 marked the birth centenary of the legendary ghazal and thumri-dadra virtuoso, Begum Akhtar. Under the scheme of centenary commemoration of eminent personages, the Ministry of Culture, Government of India declared the period 7 October 2014 – 7 October 2015 to be celebrated in her cherished memory. NaadSaagar Archives & Documentation Society for South Asian Music, in collaboration with the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, has conceptualized a Project to pay homage to the departed great, while utilizing the occasion to do something meaningful in order to further her legacy. The Project consists of the following components:

 

1.                  Commemoration Festivals in Hyderabad, Bhopal & Lucknow

2.                  Web Portal on the legacy of Begum Akhtar

3.                  Exhibition on the life & times of Begum Akhtar

 

The first two-day festival is being organized on 3 & 4 July 2015 in the campus of the University of Hyderabad. The festival will feature performances by Vidushi Shanti Hiranand, Smt. Shubha Joshi, Ustad Mohammed Ahmed Warsi Nasiri Qawwal and Shri Sudeep Bannerji. In addition, there will be a film screening of 'Hai Akhtari...', directed by S. Kalidas and poetry reading of selected ghazals of Shakeel Badayuni, Faiz Ahmed Faiz and Jigar Moradabadi by students of UoH.

Friday, 3 July 2015

11:00 a.m.: Film Screening - 'Hai Akhtari...', directed by S. Kalidas with an introduction by and followed with a Q&A with the director. Venue: Sir C. V. Raman Auditorium

5:30 p.m. onwards: Performances – Smt. Shubha Joshi (Thumri-Dadra), followed by Ustad Mohammed Ahmed Warsi Nasiri Qawwal (Qawwali). Venue: DST Auditorium

 

Saturday, 4 July 2015

11:00 a.m.: Poetry Reading - Selected ghazals of Shakeel Badayuni, Faiz Ahmed Faiz and Jigar Moradabadi recited by students of UoH. Venue: Sir C. V. Raman Auditorium

5:30 p.m. onwards: Performances – Shri Sudeep Bannerji (Thumri-Dadra), followed by Vidushi Shanti Hiranand (Ghazal). Venue: DST Auditorium
